1. A Novel Portable System For Improving Accuracy Of Reimbursement For Fruit Picking

Various methods for reimbursing pickers have been employed worldwide, with most fruit growers now paying a piece-rate to small picking teams for bins (e.g. for pome fruit) or for buckets (e.g. for sweet cherries, blueberries).  Regardless, paying piece-rate is beset with inaccuracies that cause significant financial losses. Our tests in commercial sweet cherry and apple orchards revealed variability of 25 – 30% of final weight among bins and buckets. For example, in sweet... Y.G. Ampatzidis, M.D. Whiting

2. Feasibility of Estimating the Leaf Area Index of Maize Traits with Hemispherical Images Captured from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Feeding a global population of 9.1 billion in 2050 will require food production to be increased by approximately 60%. In this context, plant breeders are demanding more effective and efficient field-based phenotyping methods to accelerate the development of more productive cultivars under contrasting environmental constraints. The leaf area index (LAI) is a dimensionless biophysical parameter of great interest to maize breeders since it is directly related to crop productivity. The LAI is defined... M. Perez-ruiz, E. 3. Mapping Soil Health and Grain Quality Variations Across a Corn Field in Texas

Soil health is a key property of soils influencing grain yield and quality. Within-field mapping of soil health index and grain quality can help farmers and managers to adjust site-specific farm management decisions for economic benefits. A study was conducted to map within-field soil health and grain protein and oil content variations using apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) and terrain attributes as their predictors. Two hundred and two topsoil samples were analyzed to determine soil health... K. Adhikari, D.R. Smith, C. Hajda, P.R. Owens
