Let's Define Precision AgricultureToday, several dozen definitions exist to define the term “precision agriculture”. Some of these definitions are more widely used than others. However, the public perspective on precision agriculture has been changing with time and the original definitions may no longer be representative of this change. Many of the authors of published definitions are members of the International Society of Precision Agriculture (ISPA), and it will be a useful exercise to gather society-wide opinion on the proper definition. Please complete this short survey in an effort to develop a new definition and publish it on the front page of ... |

Personal Reflection on ACPA and PA17by Ian Yule The (Asia Australasia Conference on Precision Agriculture) ACPA was an interesting barometer in how things are changing and how different parts of the world have different problems to deal with. From a personal point-of-view I felt the New Zealand held ACPA conference was quite different to many of those I had attended over the years. The world-wide participants were mainly from Asia, Australasia, but there were numbers from the USA and Europe. The audience was actually younger than most conferences I had been to, there were more women, more women demonstrating leadership through presentations and invited ... |

Some Thoughts Around Robotics and Automationby Ian Yule I have been to two conferences recently where ideas around robotics and automation have been discussed and very different solutions offered. Ideas around robotics and automation are continuing and there are a number of schools of thought as to how agriculture will respond. Will we go for smaller robots and robot swarms to complete tasks or will we see our major ag companies produce driverless versions of their present equipment. While attending the Agricultural Engineering 2017 conference just before the Agritechnica exhibition held in Hannover in November 2017 I was reminder about some of the fundamentals of the ... |
Survey of the use of apps and/or digital platforms for data management in agriculture. Survey 2022.Precision Agriculture has two major strategic partners that enhance the degree of adoption by users, on the one hand, Agricultural Machinery, which is no longer just an articulated set of parts for the purpose of optimizing energy use through of the application of power in agricultural tasks, but today it needs technologies that improve its efficiency with care for the productive environment. On the other hand, the second strategic partner is Digital Agriculture (AD), which has developed and incorporated applications and/or digital platforms for managing agricultural data, based mainly on the use of satellite images that, with advanced computational ... |
Technology and Science Innovation Investment in Our Primary Industry Sectorby Ian Yule There are clearly a number of sources of funding for innovation investment in the AgriFood Tech space. Historically we used to consider the primary sector as being agriculture, horticulture, livestock and forestry, but we are now much more integrated in our thinking of farm to fork, or producer to consumer. Supply Chain and retail attracts over 3 times the level of investment compared to on-farm activities. Various mechanisms are at work at any point in time with a number of different funding sources, either private or public. A very good starting point to build an understanding of ... |

The Global Soil Organic Carbon Map (GSOCmap)The Global Soil Partnership (GSP) and the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) launched a global endeavor to develop the Global Soil Organic Carbon map (GSOCmap) using a country-driven approach as part of the Global Soil Information System (GLOSIS). GSP provided technical support and on-the-job training to most countries to produce national SOC maps according to standardized specifications. The Global Soil Organic Carbon map V1.0 is an important stepping stone to better know the current Soil Organic Carbon stock stored beneath our feet and soils’ potential for further sequestration. The data are also available as Geotiff. |
Transition to data-driven decisions on the farmThe hard part of transitioning to data-driven decisions isn’t when the data supports what you already believe to be true. The difficult part is when the data analysis challenges what we think we already know. |
