Spatio-Temporal Variability Characteristics of Soil Moisture Content in Different Growth Stages of Winter Wheat

To advance site-specific management of soil Volumetric Moisture Content (VMC), the paper aimed to analyze spatial variability characteristics and explored the storage amount of VMC by Sequential Gaussian Simulation method (SGS) on basis of Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) data at the field scale, which covered the different wheat growth stages, including Tillering stage, Stem elongation or jointing stage, Heading stage, Milky stage and Harvest stage for wheat growth stage. The total of 499 moisture content data were conducted in 2014, covering the whole winter wheat growth stages. The study results indicated that the spatial autocorrelation coefficient presented the smaller and smaller tendency for the different wheat growth stages, from Tillering stage, Joint stage, Heading stage, Milky stage to Harvest stage, the random factors, such as irrigation and precipitation status have more important effect on VMC than the structural factors. The study also showed that the spatio-temporal evolution of VMC was developed on precision grid scale, which reflected the temporal evolution of the spatial pattern and the spatial distribution of temporal evolution with wheat growth stages, and the spatial variability characteristics and spatial pattern of VMC were explored to clarify the spatial process characteristics of VMC in the case area. We preliminary explored the spatial relationship between irrigation water amount and the spatial variability of VMC from the Joint stage, divided into the stability area and sub-stability area of VMC, and the spatial variability map of stability area and sub-stability area of VMC was created by SGS combining with Geographic Information System (GIS) in the case study, which indicated there is less irrigation water amount in the stability area than in sub-stability area of VMC for winter wheat Joint growth stage.
